Website chatbot guide

How to add an AI chatbot to your website

A useful website chatbot needs more than a script tag. It needs current source material, clear limits, a way to show evidence, and a path to a person when the answer is missing. This guide walks through that process without assuming a large support team.

Start with one job and one audience

Choose a narrow first job such as answering product questions, explaining onboarding, or helping visitors find the right service. A bot trained on every file in the company is harder to test and more likely to surface outdated or conflicting information.

Write down ten real questions from that audience before uploading anything. These questions become your acceptance test and keep the project tied to customer needs rather than a feature checklist.

  • Collect the pages that answer those ten questions.
  • Remove duplicate and expired policies.
  • Keep private account actions outside the first launch.

Ground answers in your website content

Knowvo splits your content into passages and combines keyword and semantic search. That helps a visitor find an exact product code as well as a paraphrased concept. The selected passages are supplied to your chosen language model as evidence for its response.

Enable citations and open them during testing. A reference makes the retrieved source visible, but you should still verify that the source supports the wording, numbers, and conditions in the answer.

Test failure paths before publishing

Ask questions the content does not answer, questions with false assumptions, and requests to ignore the bot's rules. Strict grounding should decline or hand off when retrieval does not find sufficient evidence. Test the contact capture and human inbox from end to end.

After publishing, review the first conversations. Repeated unanswered questions usually indicate a documentation gap. Fix the source, reprocess it, and repeat the same test rather than hiding the gap in a longer prompt.

  • Check desktop and mobile placement.
  • Confirm consent text before collecting contact details.
  • Measure useful answers, handoffs, and missing content separately.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to code to add the chatbot?

No. Knowvo provides an embeddable widget after you configure and test a chatbot. A developer may still help with placement, consent requirements, or advanced integrations.

Can the chatbot use my existing website?

Yes. You can add supported web pages as knowledge sources. Review the imported text and keep those pages current because the bot can only ground answers in the content it has processed.

Which AI model does it use?

You connect your own provider key and select a supported model from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Mistral, or Groq. Provider usage is billed separately from Knowvo.
